Delcam holds first meeting of 8 million Euro project on machining with robots

Delcam recently held the inaugural meeting in Alicante, Spain, of the eight million Euro COMET project funded by the European Commission. As the Co-ordinating Partner, Delcam is combining its experience and expertise in manufacturing with thirteen other technical partners from eight countries across Europe to develop plug-and-produce COmponents and METhods for adaptive control of industrial robots for high-end machining that will enable cost effective, flexible and reliable manufacturing solutions.

The other partners include Nikon (Belgium), ARTIS (Germany), AMRC (UK), TEKS (France), Fraunhofer IPA (Germany), BTU (Germany), Lund University (Sweden), Gizelis (Greece), University of Patras (Greece), N Bazigos (Greece), DemoCenter Sipe (Italy), SIR (Italy) and Nisaform (Czech Republic). The COMET project will impact on high-precision automotive, aerospace, and mould and die applications.

The thirty-month project aims to overcome the challenges facing European manufacturing industries by developing innovative machining systems that are flexible, reliable and predictable, with an average 30% cost-efficiency saving in comparison to machine tools. From a conceptual point of view, industrial robot technology could provide an excellent base for machining, being both flexible (due to their lay-out) and cost efficient (robots cost two to five times less than machine tools). However, industrial robots lack absolute positioning accuracy, are unable to compensate for deviations caused by process forces, and lack reliable programming and simulation tools to ensure right-first-time machining. These three critical limitations currently prevent the use of robots in most machining applications.

Innovations to overcome these limitations proposed by the COMET consortium include an adaptive toolpath-generation system for robots based on kinematic and dynamic models, an adaptive tracking system and a High Dynamic Compensation Mechanism. These innovations will improve robot accuracy, reduce setup times by as much as 50%, and enable precise first-time programming and simulation with real-time correction of the robot path.

According to the coordinator of the project, Jan Willem Gunnink from Delcam, "The COMET consortium contains a unique combination of partners from industry, research institutes and universities who all have an enormous drive to deliver project results to European manufacturing industries. The inaugural meeting already showed a great team spirit and a strong belief in the project goals. With my colleagues in the Management Board of this project, I am confident that these goals can support European manufacturing industries to continue to move forward.”

From January 2011, the website www.cometproject.eu will provide regularly updated project results.

This project is co-funded by the European Commission as part of the European Economic Recovery Plan (EERP) adopted in 2008. The EERP proposes the launch of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) in three sectors, one of them being Factories of the Future (FoF).

Factories of the Future is a EUR 1.2 billion program in which the European Commission and industry are collaborating in research to support the development and innovation of new enabling technologies for the EU manufacturing sector.

Luxion supports PTC Creo™

Irvine, California - Luxion, a developer of advanced rendering and lighting technology and makers of KeyShot, the first realtime ray tracing and global illumination program, today announced that it was selected by PTC, The Product Development Company, as a launch partner for “Project Lightning,” now known as Creo. Luxion will continue to support the PTC customer base by providing the ability to import Pro/ENGINEER data (now known as Creo Elements/Pro) natively into KeyShot on both PC and Mac. In addition, Luxion offers a plugin for Pro/ENGINEER that provides a dynamic link between Pro/ENGINEER and KeyShot. This plugin is available to all KeyShot customers free of charge from the KeyShot website.

Gerber Technology Releases AccuMark 8.4.1

Automation is a powerful capability in AccuMark. The Batch engine provides users with the ability to automatically move jobs through different processes in the system. Improvements to 8.4.1 provide enhanced flexibility and control in Batch for customize processing to meet a users specific needs.

A new compaction function is now available to help improve material utilization. This function can be used interactively during marker making. Once a group of pieces are placed, Compact Marker can be used to improve the efficiency of that section of the marker.

Significant enhancements have also been made to AccuMark’s ability to generate cut data. The automatic start point option automatically identifies the knife entry points at optimal locations – where there is limited congestion. There is also a new option to cut certain line segments more slowly due to complex contours.

Managing inconsistent fabric can be a time consuming process. The new support for shade zones in AccuNest makes this process much more manageable. Markers for fabrics with variations in shading can now be made automatically with AccuNest, providing the best possible fabric efficiency.

EADS and Dassault Systèmes to Reach a New level of Cooperation to Accelerate Introduction of PLM 2.0

Velizy-Villacoublay, France – Dassault Systèmes today announced enhanced cooperation with EADS in the PLM domain, supporting the recent EADS initiative called Phenix PLM Harmonization Center (PHC). Dassault Systèmes Reports Strong Third Quarter Results With New Licenses Revenue up 54% in Constant Currencies

Paris ─ Dassault Systèmes (DS) (Euronext Paris: #13065, DSY.PA) reports IFRS unaudited financial results for the third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2010. These results were reviewed by the Company’s Board of Directors on October 27, 2010.

“Dassault Systèmes delivered a powerhouse third quarter thanks to important contributions from all of our brands and superb execution from every organizational unit in DS and among our sales partners around the globe. We were very pleased by both the level of new software sales and the growth of our recurring software revenue, commented Bernard Charlès, Dassault Systèmes President and Chief Executive Officer. “Given the backdrop of a still fragile economic recovery, this performance demonstrates the value of our industry solutions for our customers. “We continued to gain important new references for our Version 6 global collaborative platform, amongst the most recent of which was Bell Helicopter’s decision to select ENOVIA V6 and expand the usage of our products to include SIMULIA, DELMIA and 3DVIA and to upgrade to CATIA V6.”

DS completed the acquisition of the IBM PLM operations on March 31, 2010 and these operations were merged into the Company’s operations within its PLM business segment for the six-month period commencing April 1, 2010. Due to the deep integration of former IBM PLM employees into the Company’s operations, involving many changes in sales territories and responsibilities, it is not possible to track the IBM PLM revenue and profit since the acquisition date. As previously disclosed, the IBM PLM share of DS software revenue was estimated at approximately €45 million in the 2009 third quarter.

Altair Engineering and SAMTECH Join Forces to Provide Integrated Finite Element Solution

The new interface offers customers highly automated, seamless pre-processing, solving and post-processing using HyperWorks and SAMCEF.

TROY, Mich – Altair Engineering, Inc., a leading global provider of simulation technology and engineering services, announced today that it has integrated HyperWorks’ HyperMesh pre-processing software and HyperView post-processing software with SAMTECH’s SAMCEF software, one of the most popular finite element analysis (FEA) solver tools, in particular within Europe’s Aeronautic, Space and Defense industry. SAMTECH is a leading provider of simulation software for FEA, MBS and Optimization.

Altair developed an interface between HyperMesh and SAMCEF, which allows HyperMesh models to be read directly by SAMCEF. SAMTECH, in turn, built an interface between SAMCEF and HyperView HyperView using H3D, Altair’s compressed binary file format. This enables SAMCEF output files to be exported in H3D format, which can be read directly by HyperView without manual translation.

Altair Engineering to Acquire SimLab Corporation

Acquisition of SimLab technology and expertise increases powertrain depth and broadens Altair’s software portfolio.

Headquartered in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., SimLab specializes in highly automated, tailored finite element modeling solutions for powertrain systems within the automotive and heavy equipment industries. Geometric releases DFMPro version 2.3 for Pro/ENGINEER® Excel based reports facilitate easy tracking of manufacturability issues

ESI Releases PAM-CEM Simulation Suite 2010

Paris, France – ESI’s PAM-CEM Simulation Suite addresses realistic models in their early “electromagnetic” design stage thanks to unique coupling capabilities allowing multi-scale electromagnetic phenomena to be assessed in the middle and high frequency ranges. End-users thus benefit from PAM-CEM’s ability to handle fully equipped 3D models, featuring on-board complex antennas as well as sophisticated cable networks.

The 2010 version of PAM-CEM Simulation Suite includes several key enhancements of significant benefit for industrial users, among which there are two major enhancements of special interest to the Automotive and Marine sectors:

– Direct access to the complete electromagnetic environment, beyond the usual computational area, taking into account additional reflecting vehicles and/or obstacles, if any.
– Dedicated High Frequency software tool, relying on Physical Optics combined with Equivalent Edge Diffraction and dealing with aeronautics RADAR applications or Antenna Radiation on-board large sized naval ships.

Near radiated fields for Automotive RADAR
The previous version of PAM-CEM offered a dedicated upgrade to access electromagnetic fields radiated in the so-called “near zone”, i.e. outside the 3D computational domain but not yet in the far zone. With the brand new 2010 upgrade, additional reflecting obstacles or vehicles can be taken into account together. Also, very thin paint bumper coatings that interfere with automotive RADAR devices are treated.

Flow Science Announces Release of FLOW-3D/MP Version 4.1

SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO, October 25, 2010. Flow Science, Inc. announces that a new release of the distributed-memory version of its FLOW-3D computational fluid dynamics software, FLOW-3D/MP, is now available.

FLOW-3D/MP Version 4.1 offers substantial performance improvements, up to 40x on 64 processor cores giving FLOW-3D/MP users the opportunity to run larger and faster simulations than ever before. Version 4.1 includes a variety of subroutines in FORTRAN source form that allow users to customize FLOW-3D/MP. Users can customize boundary conditions or add their own models to meet their unique CFD modeling requirements. The ability to post-process results from serial and parallel versions of FLOW-3D has been integrated into FLOW-3D/MP 4.1. FLOW-3D/MP, first released in 2006, uses multi-block methodology to decompose the computational domain into blocks, which are then distributed among the nodes in a cluster. FLOW-3D/MP v4.1 has been tested extensively on both Windows Server 2008 and Linux systems (RHEL 4 & 5 and SUSE 10 &11).

ESI Releases PAM-RTM 2010

The industrial Liquid Composite Molding (LCM) simulation tool for large and complex components.

Paris: Infusion is a process widely used to manufacture large components such as wind blades or wing boxes. However, determining vent locations and injection strategy is a real challenge for large, complex parts made of different composite materials and inserts and for which the resin flow through the thickness is not uniform. Until now, no simulation tool could accurately manage these large or complex components requiring volumic modeling, costing companies multiple expensive and time-consuming trials to reach a working manufacturing process.

PAM-RTM 2010 is part of ESI’s Composites Simulation Suite of dedicated industrial software for the design, performance and manufacturing simulation of composite components. The 2010 release of PAM-RTM includes a high performance solver enabling Distributed Memory Processing (DMP) computations for Liquid Composites Molding (LCM) process simulation. It covers a wide range of manufacturing processes based on LCM, helping process engineers and designers to quickly and efficiently evaluate manufacturing strategies and optimize process parameters regardless of component size.

Thanks to the DMP solver capability and an optimized graphical interface, components using millions of elements (shells as well as solids) are now treated and, more importantly, simulations can be completed in a matter of hours. PAM-RTM 2010 addresses industrial time constrains with the highest level of accuracy, enabling LCM simulation for very large parts, for complex geometries requiring a detailed mesh and for thick parts in which the non-uniformity of the resin flow through the thickness cannot be neglected. PAM-RTM 2010 is a unique and powerful tool dedicated to industries – including the wind energy and aeronautic sectors – that manufacture complex or high-dimensioned Liquid Composites Molded components.

“Snecma Propulsion Solid (Safran Group) designs, develops and produces solid rocket motors and composite materials for defense, space, aeronautics, and industry applications. Recently, we showed at an RTM conference organized by the PPE (Pôle de Plasturgie de l’Est) some of our achievements in the development of flex-seal cowls,” said Martine Dauchier, R&D Phenolic Ablative Materials Engineer, Snecma Propulsion Solide, SAFRAN Group. “Introducing 3D RTM composite materials for flex-seal cowls led to materials and assembly cost savings. PAM-RTM 2010 offers additional enhancements and consolidations of 2009 functionalities such as the automatic injection flow rate control to reduce porosity in the parts and the “one shot” simulation to rapidly estimate the last area to be filled and filling time, the conditional opening and closing of the gates, the influence on permeability of fiber shearing during draping – modules originally developed by the ‘Chaire sur les Composites à Haute Performance (CCHP) of École Polytechnique de Montréal’ – and the advanced draping functionalities for more realistic fiber orientation prediction, among other improvements. All these enhancements provide users with a more rapid decision-making solution for process, part quality and mold optimization.

Among the new functionalities of 2010, two major developments also from the Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal have been implemented:
* automatic determination of the best location of injection ports (based on genetic algorithms);
* Compression Resin Transfer Molding (CRTM) and Articulated Compression Resin Transfer Molding (A-CRTM) process simulation.

Improvements in ANSYS 13.0 enhance solution speed and fidelity, offering customers an even greater advantage. The new software release includes solver methods that leverage advanced technology to more quickly deliver accurate answers. For example, in the structural mechanics arena, 3-D rezoning can be used for applications that involve large shape deformations. It allows engineers to stop their simulation as their mesh becomes distorted -- then remesh the material's current state and continue the simulation.

The HFSS(TM) transient solver for dynamic electromagnetic simulations -- such as broadband and radar -- incorporates automatic adaptive mesh refinement and an innovative local time-stepping procedure to accurately represent the geometry and fields while optimizing runtime, stability and efficiency. In addition, a new hybrid solver bridges finite element and integral equation methods for high-frequency electromagnetics problems, making HFSS the first commercial code to have this capability. The technology is ideal for applications that combine simulation over a large distance, such as antennas, with detailed features and complex materials, such as computer components.

For modeling turbulence in fluid environments, an embedded large eddy simulation (LES) solver delivers a faster solution yet maintains accuracy, applying LES to complex areas of interest and faster-solving Reynolds average Navier-Stokes (RANS) to the rest of the solution. ANSYS 13.0 also includes a new fluid dynamics capability for multiple reference frames, which enables engineers to model multiple moving systems simultaneously -- for example, the rotation of wheels as a car moves around a corner.


ANSYS 13.0 is built to enhance users' productivity, especially critical when running complex multiphysics engineering simulations. One customer leveraging ANSYS advanced capabilities is Chromalloy, which evaluates gas turbine engine components to determine the effects of various stresses. "Chromalloy needs to evaluate the product designs of compressors or turbine blades based on real-world conditions. That means multiphysics, including fluids, thermal and mechanical/structural. New process compression capabilities in ANSYS 13.0 will make the work of customers like Chromalloy even more efficient and seamless. An integration with Microsoft(R) Excel(R) enables users to interact with spreadsheets that contain analytic representations of models and parameter table definitions. Other enhancements include an innovative cutcell meshing feature that produces nearly all hexahedral elements on complex 3-D geometry automatically, an external data mapper that imports data in the form of a column text file defining a point cloud, and tighter integration among the Maxwell(R), HFSS and mechanical solvers when performing electromagnetic-thermal-structural simulations.


ANSYS 13.0 brings a new level of software and computational power to engineering simulation. Power enhancements include a new and unique application of variational technology that reduces solution time by a factor of five to 10 when applied to harmonic analysis. The latest ANSYS release also features greater support for GPU processors, which can be offloaded with complex, time-consuming algorithms to increase both processing speed and accuracy.

Taking the next step on its path of continuing expansion, international computer-aided-manufacturing (CAM) industry leader DP Technology, maker of ESPRIT®, has opened a new office in Bamberg, Germany.

“Our business grows as we enhance our reseller and machine-tool partner network,” says Udo Ehnes, European technical manager for DP Technology. Ehnes, who managed DP’s premier German office for 12 years, now oversees its new-and-improved successor.

Delcam to consolidate CAM leadership at JIMTOF

Delcam will look to consolidate its position as the world’s leading specialist supplier of CAM software at the JIMTOF exhibition to be held in Tokyo from 28th October to 2nd November. The latest NC Software and Related Services Market report from leading analysts CIMdata showed that, in 2009, Delcam again had the highest vendor revenues of all the CAM-centric companies and so completed a decade as the world’s leading CAM specialist. The company first achieved its global leadership in 2000, when it overtook Japanese developer Hitachi Zosen, and has kept that position ever since. After record six-month sales for the first half of this year, Delcam is expecting to extend its lead when CIMdata’s report on 2010 is published.

The CIMdata report also confirmed that Delcam has the largest development team in the industry, with 165 people working on the company’s CAM software. Only two other companies employ more than 100 CAM developers; Siemens PLM with 121 and Dassault with 110. Furthermore, the company was reported to have shipped more industrial seats of CAM software than any other supplier during the year.

3D CAD Viewer combined with job shop software delivers real benefits

Sescoi’s WorkXPlore 3D high-speed CAD viewer, and its MyWorkPLAN custom manufacturing system, have enabled Pentaxia Ltd to produce accurate tooling quotations in less than 20 minutes. The rapid response to enquiries is essential to its business as the company, located in Derby, produces patterns and tooling used in the production of composite panels for Formula 1, aerospace and defense applications.

BUDAPEST – An award-winning design is the first commercial high rise building in Australia completely designed, constructed and handed over as a built model with asset management software using Building Information Modeling (BIM). The Ark Building, the Urban Taskforce 2010 Development Excellence Award winner designed by Rice Daubney, breaks boundaries, challenges traditions, and sets new design benchmarks.

Designed using ArchiCAD by GRAPHISOFT, the development of ‘Ark’ as a fully-integrated Building Information Model began with the consultants and designers, and continued through to the construction of the building. This ensured that the data embedded in the sophisticated BIM model could be used by the client for ongoing asset management and building performance. “BIM helped visualize a complex building design and allowed coordination of structure and services in a highly collaborative environment,” said Mark Shoolman, Project Architect at Rice Daubney.

In addition to its new approach to architectural form, with its dramatic folded shapes, the building excels in environmental terms as well through the use of Tri-generation. The building, which has achieved a 6 star Green Star rating, collects and recycles rainwater.

The user simply loads the machining feature, selects the model and BobCAM loads all of the depths and correct tools for the operation. Then the user can further customize the operations and automatically generate the toolpaths and g-code program for the machine of choice. BobCAM offers powerful functionality for profiling, pocketing, engraving, plunge roughing as well as the more advanced 3 axis toolpaths such as Z-Level roughing and finishing operations.

The new PRO toolpaths that have been added are Advanced Roughing, Rest Machining, Pencil and Flatlands 3 Axis toolpaths and the Equi-Distant Offset Contour. The Rest machining feature allows you to automatically use a cleanup tool to machine left over material that the roughing tool could not machine. The Equi-Distant toolpath maintains the exact step over for the tool regardless of the models complexity.

Multiple Enhancements Drive Improved Productivity

Delcam India celebrates 10th anniversary at Technical Summit

Delcam held its annual Asian Technical Summit in Pune, India, from 19th to 21st October as part of the celebrations to mark the tenth anniversary of the founding of its Delcam India subsidiary. The Summit is held each year to present the latest developments from the company to its leading customers, academicians and the technical media in the region. This year’s meeting, which was sponsored by HP and DMG/Mori Seiki, and supported by Haas, was the tenth in the series and the first to be held in India. Close to 100 delegates attended from 11 countries.

In the last ten years, Delcam India has grown from its initial staff of three to more than 125 employees. The company is based in new, purpose-built headquarters in Pune that cost around $1 million when it was constructed in 2006. It also operates 14 regional offices spread across the country, to support a growing customer base of over 1,200 customers.

The Summit comes at a time when Delcam is on target to achieve record sales this year, having staged a strong recovery from last year’s downturn. 2009 was the worst year in the CAM industry’s history, with overall sales down by 15% according to the latest report from US analysts CIMdata. This sharp decline caused many of Delcam’s competitors to suffer heavy losses, and to reduce their investments in research and development and customer support.

In contrast, Delcam increased its expenditure in both areas and is now reaping the rewards as the business climate improves.
